Details
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our transfer driver will warmly welcome you and drive you to a hotel in Arusha. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy as you wish. You might choose to unwind by the lodge pool or venture out to explore the vibrant town of Arusha. Later in the afternoon, our team will provide a comprehensive briefing, preparing you for the adventure that awaits on your upcoming trek.
Following breakfast, you'll head to the entrance gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. While your guide handles registration, take a moment to absorb the surroundings, read information boards, and observe the mountain crew preparing for the ascent. Your trek begins through the refreshing rainforest, where lush green moss and lichen cover the ground, and towering trees and ferns provide shelter from the sun. Keep an eye out for the black and white colobus monkeys in the branches as you proceed. After 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you'll reach the Machame Camp, located at an elevation of 3,010 meters above the tree line. Here, you'll enjoy your evening meal and spend the night in tents.
You'll continue your ascent, bidding farewell to the rainforest and entering the moor and heathland. As you make your way to New Shira Camp at 3,845 meters, breathtaking views of the mountain range will unfold before you. By mid-afternoon, you'll reach your destination, offering a stunning view of the sun glistening against the rock face and glacier of Kibo. This picturesque setting will be your overnight stay at New Shira Camp.
Today's trek will encompass an elevation gain of 700 meters, with your final destination only slightly higher than the previous night. This gradual gain helps your body acclimatize to the altitude changes, preparing you for the ascent to over 4,500 meters in the following days. Your trek will commence by ascending above the Shira Plateau toward the Lava Tower at 4,640 meters. The landscape evolves into an alpine desert, with vegetation becoming more sporadic. Traverse through the sweeping Barranco Valley adorned with lobelia and giant senecio plants. After about 6 to 7 hours, you'll reach the Barranco Camp, renowned as the most beautiful camp on the mountain. There, you'll have your evening meal and spend the night.
Today's trek includes the iconic "Barranco Wall," where a firm grip is essential. Your guides will provide support as needed along the way. Traverse the ridge and relish breathtaking views of Kibo's southern glacier. Stop for a lunch break in the Karanga Valley before embarking on a 2 to 3-hour ascent to Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters. At the camp, take a well-deserved break, enjoy your evening meal, and rest early for the night.
On Day 6, your ascent to Uhuru Peak begins from Barafu Camp (4,640 m) at approximately midnight. You'll receive hot tea and a light snack to energize you for the climb. Guided by a headlight, you'll ascend the rocky terrain of Kibo. After 5 to 7 hours of trekking, you'll reach Stella Point, followed by the crater ridge leading to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), offering a stunning 360° view of the surroundings. Descending along the same route, you'll return to Barafu Camp before midday. Enjoy a warm meal and some rest before continuing to Mweka Camp (3,080 m) for another 1 to 2 hours of walking. At Mweka Camp, you'll have your evening meal and settle in for the night.
On Day 7, following breakfast and a traditional farewell ceremony, you will embark on the gentle descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,630 m). Upon arrival, your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to the hotel, where you can unwind by the pool and commemorate your achievement.
On this day, the AfroKlan Expeditions Team will arrange a private departure transfer, offering the choice to head to either Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back home or your next adventure, perhaps a flight to Zanzibar Island.
