11 Days Northen Circuit Route

AfroKlan offers an exceptional chance to explore the newest and lengthiest route to the summit of Kilimanjaro, showcasing the most diverse visuals during the ascent. Throughout the climb, this route allows for optimal altitude acclimatization, providing a unique experience for those who are among the first to journey through the Summit of Kilimanjaro on this newly established northern route!

The route commences from the west, starting with a lengthy drive from Arusha to Londorossi Gate. The initial two days are spent trekking through the rainforest to Shira Ridge, then across the Shira Plateau. Subsequently, the route proceeds north, encompassing a clockwise journey from Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp and School Hut before the final ascent from the east. The descent is made via the Mweka route.

Upon your arrival at the airport, a dedicated AfroKlan driver will warmly welcome you, assisting with your luggage and providing transportation to your Arusha hotel. Once settled in, you'll participate in an orientation session facilitated by our team. Expert team leaders will provide comprehensive guidance on the route and share crucial details to ensure a successful trek. Your hiking gear will be meticulously examined and adjusted as needed. The remainder of the day is dedicated to preparing for the remarkable and transformative journey ahead.
Walking Time: 3 hours Distance: 7 km Altitude Gain: 450m After a delightful breakfast at your hotel in Arusha, you’ll depart for the Londorossi Park Gate located in the West. The 3:30 hours drive takes you through the intriguing landscapes of Boma N’gombe, offering a unique cultural experience among the local people of Sanya Juu. Upon arrival, you’ll complete the registration process with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities while our team organizes and sets up all necessary gear and supplies. This is an excellent opportunity to meet your support team, including our welcoming chefs. Guides will accompany you further up the mountain to the trailhead of your trek. As you embark on this leg of your journey, you’ll traverse wild and rich landscapes filled with ancient and diverse plant species. You might spot Black and White Colobus Monkeys in the lush rainforest canopy, with occasional glimpses of larger mammals like elephants or buffalos. Your day’s destination is the Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750 m), where you'll unwind and recharge for the next phase of your adventure.
Walking Time: 6-7 hours Distance: 10 km Altitude Gain: 800m Begin your day on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro for the longest and most breathtaking day of your trek. Transition through the final segments of the rainforest before stepping into the extraordinary and grand landscape of the Low Alpine moorland zone. Witness rare flora species, such as the colossal violet lobelias and untamed greenery. Trek across the expansive Shira Plateau, a remnant of an ancient volcanic crater. Traverse the Shira Ridge as you progress towards Shira Camp 1 (3,600 m), where you'll establish your overnight campsite for rest and rejuvenation.
Walking Time: 3-4 hours Distance: 8 km Altitude Gain: 290m After savoring a hearty breakfast, your journey continues through the picturesque trek across the open moorland zone. This less-visited section of Kilimanjaro offers an untamed and serene beauty to immerse in. As you exit the Shira Plateau, you'll be welcomed by a mesmerizing view of Kilimanjaro's peak before you reach Shira Camp 2 (3,810 m). The rest of the day allows for leisure time to explore the remarkable surroundings, including the iconic Shira Cathedral, a remarkable rock buttress enclosed by pinnacle and spire formations. Your guide will also lead brief excursions to assist in everyone's acclimatization process.
Walking Time: 5-7 hours Distance: 14 km Altitude Gain: 610m The fifth day of the Northern Circuit Route on Kilimanjaro leads you eastward into the High Alpine desert zone. At this juncture, the Lemosho Route merges with the well-trodden Machame Route before you diverge onto a more secluded path. Along the way, you'll encounter unique desert plant species and witness the striking Shark’s Tooth volcanic rock formation en route to Lava Tower. This segment of your trek gradually exposes you to higher altitudes, supporting your acclimatization process. By day's end, you'll head to Moir Camp (4,200 m), nestled behind the spectacular Lent Hills, where you can unwind and relish a delicious hot meal prepared by our skilled chef.
Walking Time: 5 – 7 hours Distance: 12 km Altitude Loss: 180m Embrace the crisp mountain air as you awaken amidst the high-altitude slopes of Kilimanjaro. After breakfast and packing your gear, ascend out of the Moir Valley. A brief side-trip brings you to the summit of Lent Hills to soak in the panoramic vistas before reconnecting with the Northern Circuit trail. Traverse undulating terrain, featuring both ascents and descents, guiding you along the northern face of Kibo until you arrive at Buffalo Camp. Settle in for the evening at this stunning campsite, offering expansive views over the Kenyan plains below.
Walking Time: 5 - 7 hours Distance: 8km Altitude Loss: 150m Your Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit adventure continues with a revitalizing morning climbing up to the top of ‘Buffalo Ridge’. After stopping for lunch, you’ll continue eastwards through High and Low Alpine scenery passing increasingly sparse and rare vegetation. The day’s journey ends after circumventing the northern slopes to reach the Rongai Third Cave Camp. By this stage of the trek, you’ll be fully acclimatized to the high altitude.
Walking Time: 4 - 6 hours Distance: 6 km Altitude Gain: 930m The penultimate leg of the journey before the final ascent to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. The day's highlight is traversing The Saddle, an otherworldly terrain nestled between the Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Afterward, you'll proceed southwest to reach School Hut (4,800 m), where you'll take time to rest and prepare for the culmination of your incredible journey. Guides will meticulously inspect all your gear and provisions, ensuring readiness for the early start the following morning.
Walking Time: 11 – 15 hours Distance: 19 km Altitude Gain: 1095m Altitude Loss: 2835m Your final morning on the Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit begins with an early start. In the pre-dawn darkness, you'll set off towards Kilimanjaro’s main crater rim at Gilman’s Point. After resting there, you’ll continue onward, passing awe-inspiring ice cliffs and glaciers. Your summit at Mount Kilimanjaro is perfectly timed for the sunrise, a breathtaking natural spectacle. Share the elation of your accomplishment with your guides and support team as you take in the stunning view. Afterward, retrace your steps down the crater rim and descend via the Mweka Route to the conclusion of your journey – Mweka Camp.
Walking Time: 3 – 4 hours Distance: 10km Altitude Loss: 1420m The final trek is a short one leading to Mweka Gate. The AfroKlan team will proudly present you with a Gold Summit Certificate, commemorating your accomplishment. Our drivers will be waiting in the nearby village to transport you to a hotel in Arusha, where you can relish a hot shower, a comfortable bed, and fresh clothes.
